The Life of Elizabeth I, Pt 5 | Heart and Stomach of a King

From History Calling

It’s 1588 and THE GREATEST THREAT to Elizabeth I is coming; the SPANISH ARMADA. In this week’s History Calling video (the 14th and last in my current Tudor monarchs’ series) the end of the Tudor dynasty approaches as we look at the last 15 years of the life of Elizabeth I. We’ll begin with Elizabeth and the Spanish Armada and cover her most famous speech, given to her men at Tilbury, in which she declared that she had ‘the heart and stomach of a King’. We’ll then move on to look at how she reacted to the death of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, her greatest favourite and perhaps the only man she was ever truly in love with. We’ll see how his step-son, Robert Deveraux, Earl of Essex became a replacement favourite, only to fall from favour in spectacular fashion and end up on the block. People often ask why Elizabeth I was a good Queen. This video will offer some answers to that question, but it will also look at her bad decisions as well as her triumphs, to show that she was first and foremost, a human being and a Tudor at that, who could be cruel and ruthless when it suited her, just as so many of her family members had been before her. Nevertheless, by the 1590s, we’ll see how the woman becomes the legend, as Elizabeth solidified her position as Gloriana. The video (and the series) will finish in 1603 with the death of Queen Elizabeth I and her burial in Westminster Abbey, where she would later be joined by her cousin and rival, Mary, Queen of Scots.

Note the lower case 'r'!), attacks on the legitimacy of Pope Leo XIV as the Vicar of Christ, the legitimacy of the House of Windsor or of the claims of the Elder Line of the House of France, or attacks on the legitimacy of any of the currently ruling Houses of Europe.
