Is Pope Leo Changing the Vatican – China Agreement?



Fr Gerald Murray discusses Pope Leo XIV appointed an underground bishop as auxiliary of a key diocese in China, with the appointment also recognized by the Chinese authorities. The appointment, the first involving a mainland bishop under Leo, marks a departure from the previous pattern of episcopal nominations under the terms of the Vatican-China deal, with the pope making the appointment and the Chinese state subsequently agreeing to accept it, instead of the other way around.
