Starmer Set To Hand EU Defence Powers in Brexit Reversal

Is the man trying to start a Second Civil War!? It was the threat of a "European Army" that convinced many people to vote for Brexit in the first place.

The stage is set for a stitch-up at the UK-EU summit that could see Brexit powers traded away behind closed doors.

Keir Starmer’s method of “making Brexit work”—as his oft-used soundbite goes—appears to be to pick it apart one piece at a time. Having already ceded some of Britain’s energy powers to Brussels, among others, the Labour prime minister is now closing on a deal to tie the country’s defence to the European Union.

Before meeting with Starmer on Thursday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen hinted at efforts to secure a UK-EU “strategic security and defence partnership agreement,” saying this could “pave the way then to a joint procurement and UK participation in our SAFE programme.”

She was referring to a €150 billion joint EU fund for defence procurement. France would reportedly demand that Britain cede some of its fishing rights in order to gain access to the scheme. Brussels has also said Britain would have to pay to join the fund.

Starmer himself then played the usual cards during a press conference with the Brussels chief, saying closer ties were necessary “in a world which seems increasingly unstable with an uncertain future.”

I’m really pleased that we’ve committed to a reset of our relationship, a really important relationship, which I think will be of huge benefit to both of us.

Concerns are growing too that Labour will hand back more Brexit powers—especially on defence—at the highly anticipated EU-UK summit in May, at which leaders have agreed to aim for “as ambitious a package as possible.”

And after Starmer finally revealed in February that his opposition to a ‘youth mobility scheme’ with the bloc—which could operate on a ‘one in one out‘ basis— was a scam, more than 60 Labour MPs are now pressuring him to speed up the progress and allow tens of thousands of Europeans under the age of 30 to live and work in the UK. The prime minister is, of course, far more likely to ‘bow’ to their demands than to those insisting that hard-fought Brexit freedoms should be held closely.

Note the lower case 'r'!), attacks on the legitimacy of Pope Francis as the Vicar of Christ (I know he's a material heretic and a Protector of Perverts, and I definitely want him gone yesterday! However, he is Pope, and I pray for him every day.), the legitimacy of the House of Windsor or of the claims of the Elder Line of the House of France, or attacks on the legitimacy of any of the currently ruling Houses of Europe.
