Pope Francis chose to be buried in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, reviving an old tradition of Popes being buried elsewhere than in St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. He is the eighth pope to be buried in the basilica since the thirteenth century. His burial place is in a niche in the north aisle of the nave, between the Pauline and Sforza chapels. The Pauline chapel houses a Byzantine icon of the Virgin and Child called the ‘Salus Populi Romani’ icon, which Francis had particularly strong devotion to during his Pontificate and it was his wish to be buried by it. His simple tomb, close to the icon he so loved, bears upon it the name 'Franciscus' and includes an enlarged version of his silver pectoral cross.
The musings and meandering thoughts of a crotchety old man as he observes life in the world and in a small, rural town in South East Nebraska. My Pledge-Nulla dies sine linea-Not a day with out a line.

Why Was Pope Francis Buried Here?
Dr Barton doesn't mention the irreplacable 17th-century door destroyed to make room for his burial.

Comments are subject to deletion if they are not germane. I have no problem with a bit of colourful language, but blasphemy or depraved profanity will not be allowed. Attacks on the Catholic Faith will not be tolerated. Comments will be deleted that are republican (Yanks! Note the lower case 'r'!), attacks on the legitimacy of Pope Francis as the Vicar of Christ (I know he's a material heretic and a Protector of Perverts, and I definitely want him gone yesterday! However, he is Pope, and I pray for him every day.), the legitimacy of the House of Windsor or of the claims of the Elder Line of the House of France, or attacks on the legitimacy of any of the currently ruling Houses of Europe.
