The European Country That Disappeared ~ The Kingdom of Arles
In this episode of General Knowledge, we talk about the Kingdom of Arles. Throughout Medieval Europe we can find a number of countries that used to exist, but don't anymore. The Kingdom of Arles, also known as the Kingdom of Burgundy, is an example of this. A sovereign country that existed for a few decades in what is today Southern France, but came to be annexed - first by the Holy Roman Empire / Germany and then by France itself. Here I explain the Scandinavian origin of the people after whom the Kingdom was named, how it came to be independent at various times, and how it eventually failed its transition into a modern country. After that, I also explain difference between this Burgundian Kingdom and the Burgundian States further North, occupying part of modern France and Germany and also almost all of the Benelux region. If either had succeeded in surviving as a country, Europe's map today would look significantly different.

Comments are subject to deletion if they are not germane. I have no problem with a bit of colourful language, but blasphemy or depraved profanity will not be allowed. Attacks on the Catholic Faith will not be tolerated. Comments will be deleted that are republican (Yanks! Note the lower case 'r'!), attacks on the legitimacy of Pope Francis as the Vicar of Christ (I know he's a material heretic and a Protector of Perverts, and I definitely want him gone yesterday! However, he is Pope, and I pray for him every day.), the legitimacy of the House of Windsor or of the claims of the Elder Line of the House of France, or attacks on the legitimacy of any of the currently ruling Houses of Europe.
