In this video, FIRST RECORDED IN 2023, I explore the history, purpose and ceremonial of a curious aspect of the United Kingdom's political system - the State Opening of Parliament, when the sovereign, the king or queen travels to the Palace of Westminster and wearing the imperial state crown and his royal robes gives a speech outlining his government's policies. This ceremony has taken place since the Middle Ages and has little changed since medieval times.
