Eugenio Maria Giuseppe Giovanni Pacelli was born in 1876 into a Roman aristocratic family of the "Black Nobility". He was ordained priest in 1899 and early on worked as a diplomat on a number of missions including representing the Holy See at the coronation of King George V in London. He later served as Cardinal Secretary of State for the Holy See and Camerlengo. In 1939 he was elected to the throne of St Peter and took the name Pius XII. His reign was marked by World War II, the Nazi occupation of Rome, the early years of the Cold War against communism and a number of reforms within the Catholic Church. He emphasized Bible study and the importance of the Virgin Mary. In 1950 he invoked papal infallibility to define the dogma of the assumption of the Virgin Mary into Heaven. He died in 1958 in Castel Gandolfo. In 1965 Pope Paul VI opened his cause for canonization and in 2009 Pope Benedict XVI declared him "Venerable".

Comments are subject to deletion if they are not germane. I have no problem with a bit of colourful language, but blasphemy or depraved profanity will not be allowed. Attacks on the Catholic Faith will not be tolerated. Comments will be deleted that are republican (Yanks! Note the lower case 'r'!), attacks on the legitimacy of Pope Leo XIV as the Vicar of Christ, the legitimacy of the House of Windsor or of the claims of the Elder Line of the House of France, or attacks on the legitimacy of any of the currently ruling Houses of Europe.
