After the Civil War, immigrants of all types sought the bounty and promise of the Kansas plains. Then, disaster came from the sky. The creatures were so thick they blocked out the sun, and they ate everything, even the clothes off of people's backs. The History Guy recalls "Stricken Kansas" and the Great Grasshopper Plague of 1874.
The musings and meandering thoughts of a crotchety old man as he observes life in the world and in a small, rural town in South East Nebraska. My Pledge-Nulla dies sine linea-Not a day with out a line.

The Great Kansas Grasshopper Plague of 1874
I used to live near Valley Falls, KS. It was originally called Grasshopper Falls, from the falls in the Grasshopper River near where it was situated. After the Plague, they changed the name of the town to Valley Falls and the name of the river to the Delaware River, for fear 'Grasshopper' would deter new settlers.

Comments are subject to deletion if they are not germane. I have no problem with a bit of colourful language, but blasphemy or depraved profanity will not be allowed. Attacks on the Catholic Faith will not be tolerated. Comments will be deleted that are republican (Yanks! Note the lower case 'r'!), attacks on the legitimacy of Pope Francis as the Vicar of Christ (I know he's a material heretic and a Protector of Perverts, and I definitely want him gone yesterday! However, he is Pope, and I pray for him every day.), the legitimacy of the House of Windsor or of the claims of the Elder Line of the House of France, or attacks on the legitimacy of any of the currently ruling Houses of Europe.
