7 Things That Decide if a Catholic Mass Is Valid — Here's the Truth

From Totus Catholica

Can a Catholic Mass be invalid? In 2020, a priest in Detroit sat down to watch a home video of his own baptism and heard the deacon say we baptize you instead of I baptize you. Two words. Because of them, that baptism never happened, which meant his confirmation never happened, his ordination never happened, and every Mass he had ever offered was invalid. Most people assume a Mass is valid as long as it feels reverent and the priest seems holy. Validity has almost nothing to do with how a Mass feels. It depends on a short list of things Christ himself set down. Here are the seven that actually matter, from the temple to the upper room to your parish this Sunday. The list is older than the Church. When Jesus gave thanks over the bread, he was standing inside a thousand-year tradition: the todah, the temple's thanksgiving sacrifice brought with bread and eaten as a sacred meal in God's presence. When Greek-speaking Jews translated their Scriptures, todah became eucharistia, the word you already know in disguise. And centuries before Calvary, the priest-king Melchizedek brought out bread and wine and blessed Abraham. An authorised priest, bread and wine, a blessing, a sacrifice. The expectation is older than the Church, and the rules are not coldness. They are the reason you can walk into Mass anywhere on earth and know, not merely hope, that Jesus is there. So do not hunt for errors in your parish, and do not let this make you anxious. Let it make you grateful the next time you kneel. In this video: • Why validity has nothing to do with how a Mass feels, and everything to do with the consecration • The Detroit case: two wrong words at a font, and an entire priesthood undone • Todah and eucharistia: the Hebrew thank offering hiding inside the word Eucharist • Why a completely gluten-free host is not valid matter, and the Church's gentle workaround • Illicit is not invalid: bad music and rushed homilies do not empty the tabernacle ⏱ CHAPTERS 0:00 Two Words That Erased a Priesthood 0:55 What Valid Actually Means 2:17 The Night Before Jesus Died 2:52 Todah and Melchizedek 4:41 Bread, Wine, Words, Priest, Intention 6:48 Can a Sinful Priest Say a Valid Mass 7:34 Illicit Is Not Invalid 📖 SCRIPTURE REFERENCED • Genesis 14: Melchizedek, the priest-king, brings out bread and wine and blesses Abraham, the pattern centuries before Calvary. • Exodus 12: the unleavened bread of Passover, the bread the Last Supper was built on. • Sirach 50: the priest who poured out at the altar the blood of the grape, written about two centuries before Christ. • 1 Corinthians 11:23: Paul hands on only what he first received. This is my body. This is my blood. Do this in memory of me. • 2 Corinthians 3: the letter kills, but the spirit gives life; the objection quoted fairly and answered. ⛪ FROM THE CHURCH FATHERS & THE CATECHISM • St. Ignatius of Antioch (around 107): let that be considered a valid Eucharist which is celebrated by the bishop or by one he appoints. The word valid, already in the first century. • St. Augustine (around 400), answering the Donatists: when Peter baptises, it is Christ who baptises. When Judas baptises, it is Christ who baptises. • CCC 1411: only validly ordained priests can preside at the Eucharist. • CCC 1128: the sacraments work by the very fact of the action. A sinful priest does not make Jesus present. Jesus makes Jesus present. 📜 SOURCES & FURTHER READING • Detroit, 2020: the invalid baptism behind it all, two wrong words at a font, and a chain of sacraments broken from the font to the altar. • The bread rule: wheat with nothing foreign added, unleavened in the Latin Church as at Passover, leavened validly used in the East, and low-gluten hosts permitted. • The wine rule: natural wine from grapes and nothing else, with mustum permitted for those who cannot take alcohol. • The Donatist crisis, settled 1,700 years ago: sacraments from unworthy clergy are not worthless. • The Dead Sea Scrolls' messianic banquet rule, written before Christ: the priest must bless the bread and the new wine first. 🔗 EXPLORE MORE 🌍 Website: https://totuscatholica.org/ Rosary Guide: https://totuscatholica.org/rosary ✉️ Contact: https://totuscatholica.org/contact 🔍 Examination of Conscience: https://catholicexaminationofconscien... 📚 Free eBooks: https://buymeacoffee.com/totuscatholi... 👥 Become a Totus Insider: https://buymeacoffee.com/totuscatholi...
