Is KATHERINE HOWARD HAUNTING Hampton Court Palace? According to this famous ghost story, the fifth wife of Henry VIII is occasionally seen running and screaming through the haunted gallery at Hampton Court Palace, wearing a white dress and re-enacting the scene of her arrest there in 1541 on charges of treason and adultery which ultimately led to her execution at the Tower of London in February 1542. As well as these reports, people have said they had strange feelings in the Gallery and have fainted there, while reports of other spooky sightings in the building have also been made, including infamous CCTV footage of what looked an awful lot like a ghost throwing open some fire doors back in 2003.
But is Hampton Court Palace haunted by this most tragic Tudor Queen and does the story of her running through its halls begging for mercy from Henry VIII even match up with historic accounts of her arrest? In this Halloween special video from History Calling, we look at the evidence for these spooky goings on and ask if there’s any substance to this story, or if it’s just a good yarn to get the tourists in and something that some people report seeing to get attention? I’ll discuss the earliest instance of this story that I can find in the written record, tell you the results of a scientific study made of this alleged haunting back in 2000 and include some other reasons why people might think they’ve met a ghost.
