Cardinal Burke Condemns Deepfake Videos As 'Gravely Sinful'

Not only Pope Leo, but now Cardinal Burke, has had AI-generated videos released claiming to be him. AI-generated videos are lies, violating the Eighth Commandment: Exodus 20:16 "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour".

Cardinal Raymond Burke declared his support of Pope Leo XIV and condemned false videos claiming otherwise as the work of the devil.

Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke condemned "false videos and images" that have been circulating saying that he was opposed to Pope Leo XIV, and publicly declared his support and obedience to the pope.

"Brothers and sisters in Christ," said Cardinal Burke in a video posted on his various social media channels on Tuesday, October 21. "It has come to my attention that certain deceptive productions are being circulated which attribute to me words of opposition to His Holiness, Pope Leo XIV."

In the videos and images, Burke is purportedly delivering a "rebuke" of Pope Leo, he said.

"I state with all clarity that such assertions are entirely false. I have made no such statements, nor have I given any address or interview even remotely resembling what is being described," he said.

The videos, said Cardinal Burke, are "works of deceit produced through technological manipulation of my image to convey messages I have never delivered."

"The deliberate use of falsehood to sow division within the Church is gravely sinful," he said, and the faked images and videos "bear the unmistakable mark of the Evil One, who ever seeks to confuse the faithful and to set brother against brother within the Mystical Body of Christ."

Burke then declared "publicly and unequivocally my obedience, filial love, and unwavering respect for the Supreme Pontiff, Pope Leo XIV, the Vicar of Christ on earth."

"The unity of the Church around the Successor of Saint Peter is willed by Our Lord Himself and is essential to the integrity of our Catholic faith," he said. "I urge all the faithful to give attentive heed to the authentic teaching of the Holy Father, and not to the voices of division which distort the truth for worldly purposes and sow the seeds of scandal among souls."

Burke encouraged his followers to pray for the people who make these fake videos and images, rather than to respond with "anger or suspicion."

"The Christian’s first recourse in every trial is always to the Heart of Jesus, who conquers falsehood by the power of His truth and love," he said.

"I ask you, therefore, to pray earnestly for those who create and spread such deceptions, that, touched by divine grace, they may turn from darkness to the light of truth, from the bondage of lies to the freedom of conversion, and be reconciled to God who is rich in mercy and abounding in steadfast love."

Cardinal Burke is latest AI hoax victim

Burke is far from the only figure in the Church to be the subject of a series of artificial intelligence-generated fake videos.

In May, YouTube terminated a channel of fake Pope Leo XIV sermons after Aleteia inquired about whether it complied with YouTube's terms and conditions.

"We terminated the channel in question for violating our policies covering spam, deceptive practices, and scams," Jack Malon, a YouTube spokesperson, told Aleteia on Thursday, May 21.

The channel, named "Pope Leo XIV's Sermons," had almost 18,000 subscribers and nearly one million views on its 26 videos as of Wednesday, May 21, before it was taken down.

All of the videos were AI-generated, and Pope Leo XIV has not actually said anything attributed to him, or read in "his" voice in the videos, although some of them were loosely based on the pontiff's actual speeches and homilies.

Comments are subject to deletion if they are not germane. I have no problem with a bit of colourful language, but blasphemy or depraved profanity will not be allowed. Attacks on the Catholic Faith will not be tolerated. Comments will be deleted that are republican (Yanks! Note the lower case 'r'!), attacks on the legitimacy of Pope Leo XIV as the Vicar of Christ, the legitimacy of the House of Windsor or of the claims of the Elder Line of the House of France, or attacks on the legitimacy of any of the currently ruling Houses of Europe.
