Quo Vadis, Leo? A Sober Assessment

Latinist, translator, and publisher Ryan Grant joins Matt Gaspers to discuss their thoughts and concerns about Leo XIV's pontificate thus far. During his first formal address to the College of Cardinals (May 10, 2025), Pope Leo called upon the princes of the Church to “renew” with him their “complete commitment to the path that the universal Church has now followed for decades in the wake of the Second Vatican Council,” a path which has been disastrous for the Church. He then held up Evangelii Gaudium (Francis’s first Apostolic Exhortation) as a masterful and concrete roadmap for moving forward, highlighting “several fundamental points” from the document — a document which derides traditional Catholics and contains a host of other problematic statements. https://www.vatican.va/content/leo-xi... Nine days later (May 19, 2025), Leo once again praised Francis for "advanc[ing] with great strides the initiatives already undertaken by previous Pontiffs, especially since Saint John XXIII. The Pope of Fratelli Tutti promoted both the ecumenical path and interreligious dialogue. ... May God help us to treasure his witness!" https://www.vatican.va/content/leo-xi... Thus, it is reasonable to wonder: Is there a substantial difference between Leo XIV and Francis when it comes to doctrine? Comments are subject to deletion if they are not germane. I have no problem with a bit of colourful language, but blasphemy or depraved profanity will not be allowed. Attacks on the Catholic Faith will not be tolerated. Comments will be deleted that are republican (Yanks! Note the lower case 'r'!), attacks on the legitimacy of Pope Leo XIV as the Vicar of Christ, the legitimacy of the House of Windsor or of the claims of the Elder Line of the House of France, or attacks on the legitimacy of any of the currently ruling Houses of Europe.
