Archduke Franz Karl Joseph of Austria was born on December 7, 1802 in Vienna and died on March 8, 1878. He was a son of Emperor Franz II/I, and the brother of brother of Emperor Ferdinand I. In 1848 he renounced his claims to the throne in favour of his son Franz Joseph I.
Franz Karl was married to Princess Sophie Friederike Dorothea Wilhelmine of Bavaria, who was born on January 27, 1805 in Munich and died on May 28, 1872 in Vienna. Through her marriage to Franz Karl she became an Archduchess of Austria by marriage to Franz Karl of Austria.
Franz Karl and Sophie were the parents of Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria and of Archduke Maximilian, who later became Emperor of Mexico.
