Pope St Leo I 'The Great,' the Pontiff Who Stood Up to Attila

The first article in a series on the 13 men before Pope Leo XIV who took the name "Leo" as their Pontifical Regnal name. Some are 'great', some not so 'great'.

Originally from Etruria, the ancient territory of the Etruscans, Pope St. Leo I was elected bishop of Rome in 440 during the decline of the Roman Empire. The pope who inaugurated the Leo dynasty was undoubtedly a great theological and political figure.
