Elective Monarchy & Charles's Favorite Habsburgs

I was recently reading about the Holy Roman Empire and discovered that the Holy Roman Emperor was not initially a hereditary title but was an elected office chosen by seven electors that could pass between the princely Houses of Europe. Yet for the past few hundred years, the title was held by the Habsburgs. It seems strange to me that the electors would allow their influence in choosing the Emperor to be extinguished and for so much power to be concentrated in one Royal House. Will Charles please explain how the Holy Roman Emperor became a hereditary title that passed down the Habsburg line only. A second question I have is Who are Charles' top five Habsburgs and why? Thanks, and God Bless from your fellow LARPer
