On this day, both Old St Peter's and the currently existing St Peter's Basilica were dedicated, Old St Peter's in AD 326 by Pope St Sylvester I and New St Peter's in AD 1626 by Pope Urban VIII.
In AD 1095, Pope Urban II opened the Council of Clermont which led to the First Crusade, an attempt to reconquer the Holy Land for Christendom from the Muslim jihad.
In AD 1302 Pope Boniface VIII issued the Bull Unam Sanctam declaring ex Cathedra, "We declare, we proclaim, we define that it is absolutely necessary for salvation that every human creature be subject to the Roman Pontiff".
