Origins of the Myth of the Warfare of Religion with Science

With Lawrence M. Principe, PhD, Drew Professor of Humanities, Johns Hopkins University.

Although repudiated today by all serious historians of science, the concept of an eternal and inescapable conflict between science and religion remains strong among the general public as well as among a large number of scientists. This talk will begin by examining the historical origins of the concept, showing how it emerged from a constellation of political, social, and peculiar personal circumstances of the late 19th century. It will then explore the resilience of the concept and how, why, and by whom it has been perpetuated down to the present day, and suggests some means by which it could be more effectively countered.

Comments are subject to deletion if they are not germane. I have no problem with a bit of colourful language, but blasphemy or depraved profanity will not be allowed. Attacks on the Catholic Faith will not be tolerated. Comments will be deleted that are republican (Yanks! Note the lower case 'r'!), attacks on the legitimacy of Pope Francis as the Vicar of Christ (I know he's a material heretic and a Protector of Perverts, and I definitely want him gone yesterday! However, he is Pope, and I pray for him every day.), the legitimacy of the House of Windsor or of the claims of the Elder Line of the House of France, or attacks on the legitimacy of any of the currently ruling Houses of Europe.
