The Robes of the Order of the Garter

In this second of my series on the Order of the Garter, England's senior order of chivalry, I look at the history of the robes and insignia worn by knights, the king, queen and royal members of the order. The robes tell something of the history of the Order of the Garter and its place in national and royal identity.

Note the lower case 'r'!), attacks on the legitimacy of Pope Leo XIV as the Vicar of Christ, the legitimacy of the House of Windsor or of the claims of the Elder Line of the House of France, or attacks on the legitimacy of any of the currently ruling Houses of Europe.
