It was on this day 16 years ago that I went before a Commissioner of Oaths, and swore the following Oath of Allegiance:
I, Jovan Weismiller, do solemnly swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Queen of Canada, Her Heirs and Successors according to law, forever. So help me God.
I had 'sworn allegiance' to her many years before when I was just a young lad, placing my hand on a Bible and reciting an oath I assume I had found in an encyclopaedia.
I had actually sworn allegiance to 'the Sovereign' upon joining the Royal Canadian Legion earlier, but I discovered that the law was quite clear. The Oaths of Allegiance Act (1985) says, 'Every person who, ... of his own accord ..., desires to take an oath of allegiance shall have administered and take the oath in the following form, and no other:'
So, 16 years ago today, I swore the Oath in proper form. With the passing of Her late Majesty on 8 September 2022 and in conformity to the Oaths of Allegiance Act (1985) which states, 'Where there is a demise of the Crown, there shall be substituted in the oath of allegiance the name of the Sovereign for the time being', the oath to which I'm sworn now reads:
I, Jovan Weismiller, do solemnly swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to His Majesty King Charles the Third, King of Canada, His Heirs and Successors according to law, forever. So help me God.
God save the King!
