Julius Raymond Mazarin was born in Pescina, Abruzzo, Kingdom of Naples, on 14 July 1602 and died in Vincennes on 9 March 1661. He is better known as Cardinal Jules Mazarin, and was a diplomat and politician, first in the service of the Papacy and then of the French kings Louis XIII and Louis XIV. He succeeded Richelieu as Prime Minister from 1642 to 1661.
