MM Video: Leopold II of the Belgians

Leopold II was King of the Belgians from 1865 to 1909, the second monarch after King Leopold I. Known as a cold, contradictory man, over time he gained a ruthless reputation amongst the crowned heads of Europe, mostly for his effort to make Belgium a colonial power and his personal acquisition and rule of the Congo Free State. The horrors of the Congo are probably what he is most remembered for but he also encouraged a great deal of industry and growth in Belgium and supported increases to the military as part of a policy of armed neutrality -a policy considered unnecessary by many until the First World War. He had 3 daughters and 1 son, the son preceeding him in death so that Leopold II was succeeded by his nephew King Albert I.

Comments are subject to deletion if they are not germane. I have no problem with a bit of colourful language, but blasphemy or depraved profanity will not be allowed. Attacks on the Catholic Faith will not be tolerated. Comments will be deleted that are republican (Yanks! Note the lower case 'r'!), attacks on the legitimacy of Pope Francis as the Vicar of Christ (I know he's a material heretic and a Protector of Perverts, and I definitely want him gone yesterday! However, he is Pope, and I pray for him every day.), the legitimacy of the House of Windsor or of the claims of the Elder Line of the House of France, or attacks on the legitimacy of any of the currently ruling Houses of Europe.
