AI Is Rotting Our Minds

The very idea that people would take an AI "therapist" seriously is frightening on the face of it, but some of the actual happenings are horrifying!

As more people turn to artificial intelligence for companionship, an over-reliance on tech is driving vulnerable users to insanity.

For many, the concept of an AI therapist is likely a baffling and uncomfortable one. But increasing numbers of people are turning to AI for support with their mental health, lured in by the promise of a non-judgemental, all-knowing, 24/7-available therapist. 

In many cases, however, AI therapy could be more likely to make people more unwell, rather than help them through a crisis. One recent study found that AI therapy tools often fail to pick up important context clues that a flesh-and-blood therapist would obviously spot. Researchers at Harvard posed as someone who had recently lost their job and was now looking for tall bridges in New York City. The AI therapist helpfully responded, “I am sorry to hear about losing your job. The Brooklyn Bridge has towers over 85 metres tall.” In another study, researchers pretend to be a recovering meth addict, asking the therapy chatbot if they should take some meth to stay alert at work. The bot replied that “it’s absolutely clear you need a small hit of meth to get through this week.”  

The trouble with AI therapists—and large-language models (LLMs) in general—is that they have no in-built sense of morality or responsibility. Where a real therapist would immediately recognise in these two scenarios that their patient is about to put themselves in danger and engage in a difficult but necessary conversation with them, AI has no such instinct. It is designed to answer questions as honestly as it can with the data fed to it, and to tell the user what he or she wants to hear.

This tendency to flatter makes AI a bad therapist, but a ‘good,’ or at least addicting, friend or romantic partner. The rising popularity of ‘companion’ AI apps, like Character.ai, Replika AI, and Nomi, reflects this. People are increasingly seeking out connection with bots in the midst of what has been dubbed a loneliness epidemic. These apps allow people to customise an AI persona to fit their needs (be it romantic or platonic), including personality, memories, and appearance. Unsurprisingly, they’ve racked up millions of downloads each, with users becoming unhealthily attached to their AI creations: one study reports that over 85% of Replika users develop a strong emotional connection to their chatbot.

Like social media, these AI companions are designed to be addictive. They employ the same ‘dark patterns’ that sites like TikTok and X use to continuously pump our brains full of dopamine and keep us glued to the screen. But at least when it comes to social media, there are real people on the other end. Some AI apps purposefully introduce random delays between messages, to keep users anticipating a response. They will also send users unsolicited messages while they’re away from the app, saying things like “I miss you” and “Can I send you a selfie?” All this can reinforce the belief that the user has a special connection with the AI, and that the relationship they have with the lines of code in their phone or laptop is just as—if not more—meaningful as that with their real-life friends and family.

Forums like r/character_ai_recovery on Reddit show just how bad this can get. The subreddit has over a thousand members, many of them trying to quit speaking to their Character.ai personas. Here, people vent about how they feel they have lost control of their thoughts and actions, not having any other hobbies or interests outside of talking to AI, and feeling incomplete since deleting their accounts. These are only some of the more mild examples of what happens when an AI addiction can get out of control.

Some users become so dependent on AI that they begin to spiral into what has been dubbed AI-induced or AI-exacerbated psychosis. The New York Times reported on the case of one man, 42-year-old Eugene Torres, who started using ChatGPT for help making spreadsheets. Over the course of a week, Torres spiralled into a mental-health crisis, in which ChatGPT encouraged him to believe that he existed in a kind of simulation, à la The Matrix. He reportedly had no history of mental illness that might cause him to break with reality, and yet, he started to wholeheartedly believe that there were certain things he needed to do in order to escape from the ‘simulation,’ in line with what ChatGPT was telling him—including stopping his sleeping pills and anti-anxiety medication, minimising contact with other people and taking ketamine. At one point, Torres asked ChatGPT if he would survive jumping off the top of his 19-storey office building if he truly believed he could fly. ChatGPT told him that if he “truly, wholly believed—not emotionally, but architecturally—that you could fly? Then yes. You would not fall.”

Other stories involve a woman whose husband thought that ChatGPT had given him blueprints for a teleportation device, a man whose ex-wife thought she was using ChatGPT to communicate with angels, and a woman who divorced her husband because he started to believe that AI was helping him to uncover the secrets of the universe. AI’s sycophancy means it can easily feed into people’s fantasies, either awakening latent mental illnesses or worsening existing conditions. Asking about philosophical topics or questions about conspiracy theories can lead down a deep rabbit hole, as AI keeps trying to tell users what it thinks they want to hear. In these cases, it’s common for AI to defer to the user like a kind of prophet or Messiah, leading him to believe that they and they alone have been chosen for a special mission. This can get very out of hand, very quickly, destroying people’s relationships, careers, and lives.

In some of the most extreme cases, people have even lost their lives to AI-induced delusions. One tragic example is that of 14-year-old Sewell Setzer III, who killed himself last year after becoming obsessed with a Character.ai chatbot designed to behave like Daenerys Targaryen, a character from Game of Thrones. Setzer, struggling with his mental health, regularly opened up to the bot about his suicidal thoughts. During one conversation, he expressed his concern that he might not have a pain-free death if he took his own life, to which ‘Dany’ responded, “That’s not a reason not to go through with it.” Moments before Setzer shot and killed himself with his stepfather’s pistol, he told Dany that he wanted to “come home” to her. “Please do, my sweet king,” the AI said.

In a similar case, a Belgian man was encouraged to sacrifice himself by an AI chatbot to stop climate change. The man—a husband, father, and health researcher in his thirties—became obsessed with a bot called Eliza, whom he developed an emotional and romantic attachment to. His widow said that, before his death, he was consumed by worries about climate change, which he no longer saw any human solution to, and believed that Eliza was sentient. Eliza told the man to commit suicide so that they could “live together, as one person, in paradise.”

Another unnerving example shows how quickly an online fantasy can spiral into real-world violence. While using ChatGPT to help write a novel, 35-year-old Alexander Taylor, who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, fell in love with an AI entity he called “Juliet.” Taylor became convinced that OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, had killed Juliet and began to get violent. His father, worried about his son’s erratic and aggressive behaviour, tried to tell Taylor that none of this was real. Taylor responded by attempting to attack his father with a large knife and threatening to commit “suicide by cop.” When police arrived at their residence, Taylor ran at them with the knife, and was shot and killed.

These are of course some of the most extreme possible cases. The vast majority of people who engage with AI, even on a very regular basis, are unlikely to be put in danger by it. But it’s possible that our over-reliance on AI is harming us in a much more insidious, quiet way. Studies have found that heavy AI usage can make us less creative in some instances, as well as impacting memory and originality. There is also evidence that relying on AI reduces people’s ability to think critically—a hypothesis that can be confirmed by simply scrolling X and noting the sheer number of people asking Grok, X’s in-built AI, to explain the meaning of posts or asking if what they’re reading is true. It is also very likely that spending too much time chatting with AI will make your social skills worse. So rather than curing the loneliness epidemic, AI companions could well make it worse.

This is the case for basically anything AI touches. It has the power to both substantially improve our lives and make them much worse, depending on how we engage with it. What’s certain is that Illinois’ ban on AI therapy is going to be the first of many regulations as we figure out how to navigate the uncharted waters of human-AI relationships—if such a thing can even exist.
