PM cites “escalating actions in various European countries” as reason to act.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson will ask the EU to designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization. The request comes after several attacks on Israeli and Jewish targets, perpetrated by organized crime networks suspected to be working on orders from Iran.
“This is a really dangerous cocktail that we need to do something about, and I think the time is now,” Kristersson said.
Already last spring, a majority in the Swedish parliament wanted the government to raise the issue at an EU level. The PM will now bring the question to this week’s European Council meeting, where the situation in the Middle East will be one of the discussion points.
“We want Sweden to seriously address with other EU countries the incredibly problematic connection involving the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, their destructive role in the region, but also their escalating actions in various European countries, including Sweden, Kristersson said.
According to current EU rules, adding a new individual or entity to the terrorist list requires a decision issued by a judicial body within one of the 27 member states.
In March, a Düsseldorf court ruled that a 2022 attack on a synagogue in Bochum was initiated by the Iranian state. The European External Action Service (EEAS) determined that this provides sufficient legal basis to meet that requirement, an EU official told Euronews.
The EU is already sanctioning Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard IRGC in several ways, including with travel bans and the freezing of assets. Labeling the organization as terrorists requires a unanimous decision by EU states.
Iran’s IRGC is a powerful paramilitary organization established after the 1979 Islamic Revolution. It operates independently of the regular Iranian military and wields significant influence over Iran’s political, economic, and military spheres.
The IRGC was designated a terrorist organization by the U.S. in 2019.
