The King's Champion and His Role at the British Coronation

Britain has a wonderful array of historic offices that date back to the Middle Ages, some of them of obscure origin. A number of these offices spend much of history in abeyance, a form of suspended animation, with people only appointed to them at a Coronation of a British sovereign, and then they are only revived just for that great event. One such obscure ancient office is the Honourable the King’s Champion – a position that may go back as far as the second quarter of the twelfth century and is held by the Dymoke family, a gentry family from Lincolnshire. In this video, I explore the office, its original purpose, and the Champion's role in the coronation, how it came to be held by the present family and how it has evolved over the years.

Comments are subject to deletion if they are not germane. I have no problem with a bit of colourful language, but blasphemy or depraved profanity will not be allowed. Attacks on the Catholic Faith will not be tolerated. Comments will be deleted that are republican (Yanks! Note the lower case 'r'!), attacks on the legitimacy of Pope Francis as the Vicar of Christ (I know he's a material heretic and a Protector of Perverts, and I definitely want him gone yesterday! However, he is Pope, and I pray for him every day.), the legitimacy of the House of Windsor or of the claims of the Elder Line of the House of France, or attacks on the legitimacy of any of the currently ruling Houses of Europe.
