Notre-Dame Isn't Art — It's a Bible You Can Walk Inside

Every year, roughly 12 to 13 million people photograph Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, and almost every one of them misses the point. Most people believe it is a masterpiece of art. It is actually a masterpiece of preaching. Stone by stone, window by window, this cathedral was built to teach the Christian faith to anyone who would slow down and read it, not with words, but with sculpture, with light, and with the very direction it faces. There are seven messages hidden in plain sight, and millions of visitors stand right in front of them and never see them. This is not a monument that happens to be a church. It is a Bible you can walk inside. In an age when few could read a page of Scripture, the Church raised cathedrals that could be read like books in stone and glass. The 28 kings above the doors are not the kings of France. They are the kings of Judah, the family tree of Jesus, the stump of Jesse made visible. The whole building is a cross you can walk inside, and it faces the dawn because the rising sun was the oldest Christian image of the risen Christ. At the top of the spire, a golden rooster keeps watch over a fragment of the crown of thorns, and it was found whole in the ashes of the 2019 fire. So the next time you enter any church, slow down and read it. Notice which way it faces. Look for the cross beneath your feet. And thank God that he still speaks, even in stone.
