7 Prayers Catholics Get Wrong Every Day (The Hail Mary Will Shock You)

From Totus Catholica

Seven Catholic prayers you have been saying wrong your whole life, not wrong on the lips, wrong in the heart. You have probably prayed at least three prayers already today, and there is a good chance you did not hear a single word you said. The Catechism says something that should stop us cold: whether or not our prayer is heard depends not on the number of words, but on the fervor of our souls. By the end you will know where these words came from, why a pope recently changed one of them, why half of another is younger than the printing press, and why the prayer you rush the fastest is aimed at the most important moment of your life. None of this starts with us. The thanks after the meal is Deuteronomy's own command: when you have eaten and are satisfied, you shall bless the Lord your God. The first half of the Hail Mary is the greeting of an archangel. The Our Father came from the Lord's own lips. And the Glory Be still fights the battle it was built for in 529, insisting the Son was there in the beginning. So tomorrow, pick just one. Make the sign of the cross like you mean it. Say the thanks after the meal, not only the blessing before it. And when you reach the words now and at the hour of our death, do not rush them. That hour is the whole reason these prayers were given to you. In this video: • Why "in the name" is singular, and what your hand confesses in two seconds • Grace means thanks, and the thanks was commanded for after the meal • The line added to the Glory Be in 529 to fight a heresy the Church nearly lost to • Kecharitomene: Gabriel greets Mary with a title, not a compliment • Epiousios, the word Origen thought the evangelists invented, and Jerome's supersubstantial bread ⏱ CHAPTERS
0:00 The Prayers You Say Without Hearing 0:54 The Sign of the Cross Is Not a Warm-Up 3:14 The Glory Be: A 12 Second War 4:17 Contrition Is Not Regret (Trent) 5:25 Half the Hail Mary Is Younger Than Print 6:43 Why a Pope Changed the Our Father 7:54 The Blind Monk Behind the Hail Holy Queen 📖 SCRIPTURE REFERENCED • Deuteronomy 8:10: when you have eaten and are satisfied, you shall bless the Lord your God. • Luke 1: Gabriel's hail, full of grace, and Elizabeth's blessed is the fruit of thy womb. • Luke 24: on the road to Emmaus he took bread, blessed it, and broke it, and their eyes were opened. • John 1:1: in the beginning was the Word, the line the Glory Be was built to defend. • Matthew 6: lead us not into temptation, and give us this day our daily bread. • James 1:13: God tempts no one, the verse behind the new translations. ⛪ FROM THE CHURCH FATHERS & THE CATECHISM • Tertullian (around 200): believers traced the cross on their foreheads at every step, coming in and going out, sitting down to eat, lighting the lamps. • Origen: epiousios appears virtually nowhere else in Greek, and he thought the Gospel writers invented it. St. Jerome rendered it supersubstantial bread, and the early fathers heard in it the Eucharist. • The Catechism: prayer is heard not for the number of words, but the fervour of our souls, and even the fear of hell is a gift of the Holy Spirit. 📜 SOURCES & FURTHER READING • The Synod of Vaison (529) ordered, as it was in the beginning, added across Gaul to fight Arianism, the claim that Jesus was created. • The Council of Ephesus (431) defined Mary as Mother of God to defend who Jesus is. • Pope Pius V (1568) standardised the second half of the Hail Mary, which only appears in print in the late 15th century. • The Council of Trent: contrition is sorrow and detestation for sin, together with the resolution not to sin again. • France (2017) and Italy (2019, with Rome's approval) moved to drop not abandon us to temptation. The English wording is unchanged; the original was never wrong. • Blessed Herman of Reichenau (11th century): tradition's author of the Hail Holy Queen, a monk who could barely move or be understood, writing directions home from a real valley of tears. 🔗 EXPLORE MORE 🌍 Website: https://totuscatholica.org/ Rosary Guide: https://totuscatholica.org/rosary ✉️ Contact: https://totuscatholica.org/contact 🔍 Examination of Conscience: https://catholicexaminationofconscien... 📚 Free eBooks: https://buymeacoffee.com/totuscatholi... 👥 Become a Totus Insider: https://buymeacoffee.com/totuscatholi...
