Seven Catholic prayers you have been saying wrong your whole life, not wrong on the lips, wrong in the heart. You have probably prayed at least three prayers already today, and there is a good chance you did not hear a single word you said. The Catechism says something that should stop us cold: whether or not our prayer is heard depends not on the number of words, but on the fervor of our souls. By the end you will know where these words came from, why a pope recently changed one of them, why half of another is younger than the printing press, and why the prayer you rush the fastest is aimed at the most important moment of your life. None of this starts with us. The thanks after the meal is Deuteronomy's own command: when you have eaten and are satisfied, you shall bless the Lord your God. The first half of the Hail Mary is the greeting of an archangel. The Our Father came from the Lord's own lips. And the Glory Be still fights the battle it was built for in 529, insisting the Son was there in the beginning. So tomorrow, pick just one. Make the sign of the cross like you mean it.
