Austria: More Nurseries Dropping St. Nicholas Day Due to “Educational” Concerns

What will Krampus do tonight on Krampusnacht? The modern war on holidays has gone beyond just Christmas. It is now extending to holidays that are a vital part of a nation's culture!

“Saint Nicholas, Saint Martin’s Day, and Christmas are an integral part of our culture and identity,” complained a provincial councillor.

Every year, more and more nurseries choose not to celebrate St, Nicholas Day. Parents report that some institutions have removed St Nicholas from their programme for “educational reasons.”

Youth and Family Minister Claudia Plakolm (ÖVP) criticised this trend and called for a rethink. In her view, the problem arises from a misunderstanding of tolerance—as religious festivals are simply omitted out of fear of conflict or complaints from individual parents. Concerns about potential disputes also play a huge role.

Traditions are not outdated. They give children stability, security, and a sense of roots.

FPÖ provincial assembly members Hubert Keyl and Helmut Fiedler emphasized that “instead of drag queens, St Nicholas should be reading to the children.”

These debates about St. Nicholas in schools and kindergartens have always been absurd. Our country–our rules–our values.
