Debunking the Easter=Ishtar Myth

The depths to which the enemies of Our Lord will sink! Many atheists and so-called 'Jehovah's Witnesses' use the argument in this meme to 'prove' that Easter is a pagan festival pagan in its origins.

This is really quite laughable since I seriously doubt the Ancient Angles,  Saxons, and Jutes who named it 'Easter' in their languages had ever heard of Ishtar. Also, English, German, and a few Slavic tongues are virtually the only languages that so denote it. Most other languages have a name derived from the Greek Πάσχα (Pascha), cognate to the Hebrew פֶּסַח (Pesach), 'Passover' from which the Feast derives and which Emperor St Constantine, Equal to the Apostles, who reigned long before the Anglo-Saxons who invented the word 'Easter' were Christianised, would have called it.

In fact, even in some dialects of English, it is still traditionally called Pasch or Pascha, going back to the Anglo-Saxons over a thousand years ago.

Oh, and BTW, Ishtar is pronounced ˈɪʃtɑːr (ish-tar), not i:tɜ:ʳ (ee-ster).

Comments are subject to deletion if they are not germane. I have no problem with a bit of colourful language, but blasphemy or depraved profanity will not be allowed. Attacks on the Catholic Faith will not be tolerated. Comments will be deleted that are republican (Yanks! Note the lower case 'r'!), attacks on the legitimacy of Pope Francis as the Vicar of Christ (I know he's a material heretic and a Protector of Perverts, and I definitely want him gone yesterday! However, he is Pope, and I pray for him every day.), the legitimacy of the House of Windsor or of the claims of the Elder Line of the House of France, or attacks on the legitimacy of any of the currently ruling Houses of Europe.
