Pride Goes Before the Fall

Full disclosure-I know next to nothing about the Proud Boys save their name. Here OMM subjects the group to a purely Catholic analysis.

I saw an interesting article claiming that the Proud Boys were inspired by the Knights of Columbus. Uhhhhhh…

First of all, I really run far away from any group which has a version of “pride” in the title. It is one of the seven deadlies, after all. Yes, I’m proud of my husband, my family, my kids’ accomplishments, etc., but that is because of their accomplishments, not mine. Am I ever prideful? Darn tootin’, but then I have to head for the confessional, pick myself up and try again. Definitely something I struggle with on a daily basis. I basically look like the Fonz (please tell me somebody has seen this, at least in re-runs) when I try to say I’m wr-wr-wr-wrong. While some of people in the Knights of Columbus join me in this struggle, the overall premise of the group is one of service – service to the poor, the unborn, the Church. The Proud Boys? Not so much. They are a reactionary group. They may have been inspired by the structure of the Knights but, on the whole, they missed the boat and maybe have jumped off the pier and are trying to catch it.

My opinion of the Proud Boys? They are, indeed, a poor reaction to modern society. Do I think they’re racist? Well, considering the fact that they do, indeed, allow minorities and have minority membership, probably not. Where do I think they came from? My guess is largely broken homes, very secular lives, being told “all men are bad” (probably a huge factor), etc. Society has basically told men to sit down, shut up, and not be godly men who are heads of their families. Throw in that many do not have role models to show them how to be real men, they’re all for pummeling their political opponents and growing the hipster beard (and before I get backlash from beard sporting Catholic men and the women who love them, relax, you know what I mean. My husband sports facial hair, too.). The Knights? Most I know are men (again, there are some who just want to be in the good ol’ boys club) who have their priorities right: God, their wives, their children, and the rest of the world after that. They try to form their spiritual lives to make good decisions. They’re not going to run out and try to combat BLM/Antifa because, well, what’s the point other than violence? They know that’s how that scenario would end up, and so do the Proud Boys. Not entirely sure what the Proud Boys think they will get out of the that. The Knights would defend anyone in harms way, but they don’t go looking for a fight.

My guess is the Proud Boys have good intentions, but their desire to keep one foot in the secular world (or maybe both) is keeping them from attaining their goals. You can’t attain anything good without God. I don’t notice the prayer thing being at the center of their world. I think they also have issues with self-mastery. They think can take a day off now and then without hurting anything. Their changing views on, say, masturbation prove that point. I’m not really sure what it is. Masturbation once a month? No more? Porn occasionally? Whole lot of conflicting info. Overall, they appear to have a warped view of chastity. Mostly chaste ain’t chaste. Contrast this with the program many of the Knights have been doing – Exodus 90. It’s manly to attempt to overcome weakness. So, rather than be inspired by it, it’s too bad those in the Proud Boys just don’t make a full commitment to the authentic movement which is Christ, His Church and the Sacraments. That’s where the real men are (and real women are). Oh, and we take all sinners, but with the goal to overcome sins.

Let’s look at the “About” page (emphasis and comments mine):

The basic tenet of the group is that we are “Western chauvinists who refuse to apologize for creating the modern world.” Like Archie Bunker, we long for the days when “girls were girls and men were men.” This wasn’t controversial even twenty years ago, but being proud of Western culture today is like being a crippled, black, lesbian communist in 1953.

“Chauvinist” doesn’t mean what you think it does, so actually look it up before you fume.

The group started in the fall after congregating on Compound Media and laughing at the politically correct culture they insist we take seriously. What began as a few fans in a bar across the street from the studio singing “Proud of Your Boy” and laughing at the reparations videos of Gazi Kodzo soon became a bona fide men’s club with rituals, traditions, and even its own in-house court called “The Sharia.”

Seems like they are being sarcastic with the Sharia, and I love a good dose of sarcasm, but I’m not sure I’d want to even joke about that one since so many are harmed by it and Sharia is anything but pro-wives, mothers and daughters.

The Proud Boys confuse the media because the group is anti-SJW without being alt-right. “Western chauvinist” includes all races, religions, and sexual preferences.

This is why Milo Yiannopoulos is on board with them. They like to cause a stir. They like being inflamatory. They’re Milo’s “foot in two tribes” kind of people. Sadly, they haven’t yet come to the realization they cannot serve two masters.

Our group is and will always be MEN ONLY(born with a penis if that wasn’t clear enough for you leftists)! If you are (and were born) a woman and you would like to be involved, there is a girls group. They call themselves Proud Boys’ Girls and they’re our second-biggest demographic.” It may seem counterintuitive that a men-only group would have such a big female following, but nobody wants men to be men more than the women who depend on them. “Proud Boys saved my marriage,” says PBG Gabriela Finch. “I was completely done with it, but he won me back and fought hard for it.” This group is full of all kinds of women. Wives, girlfriends and single girls are all welcome. Just like the mens group, the girls have no other requirements about race, religion or sexual preference.

Grammar, people. It’s a beautiful thing. But, really, Proud Boys’ Girls??? Are there pink satin jackets with the name on the back to go with that? If so, I’m in! (It’s sarcasm, people!) I am not at all opposed to men-only groups, clubs, etc., but seriously, would anyone in the Knights of Columbus, Knights of Malta, etc., have their women’s arm named Knights of Columbus’ Girls? Knights of Malta’s Dames? I’m anything but a feminist, but the possessive is a disfigured view, especially since, as they say, many of them aren’t married. Hey, Gabriela, you know what else helps marriage? The Catholic Faith. Again, the Proud Boys provide a sad attempt at genuine Christian love. Come on over, boys. We’d love to have you. You’ll be blown away by God’s plan for men and women, and it might leave you with peace instead of looking for a  fight.

The fact that this group has exploded so quickly is a testament to how completely finished young American men and women are with apology culture. Men have tried being ashamed of themselves and accepting blame for slavery, the wage gap, ableism, and some fag-bashing that went on two generations ago, but it didn’t work. So they’re going with their gut and indulging in the natural pride that comes from being part of the greatest culture in the world. It’s very freeing to finally admit the West is the best. That’s because it’s the truth.

And this is the crux of it, isn’t it? They know something is wrong with society, the families they grew up in, and their relationships. They just don’t realize it’s sin, so they don’t know how to fix it. It’s all about their pride. Well, as the title states, pride goes before the fall.

So, while I doubt most of these “boys” are racists, I do think they are poorly formed men, but this is what you get when children have been left to raise themselves, either because of divorce or because parents are too self-absorbed with themselves. I’d encourage them to look into the group that supposedly inspires them, instead.
