Now that the dust is settling a little (although likely to be stirred right back up again), I've been reflecting a lot on how we can move forward and what the takeaways are from the scandals in the Catholic Church. Why is it so painful and how do we adjust our own expectations and perspective to be more fully aligned with reality so that when it presents itself, it isn't so shocking. I think a lot of this has to do with our tendency to prefer unrealistic expectations in the hopes that they are true, even if it means risking disappointment. There's also a desire to have what is ultimately good in this life and just keep it. But God wants us to fix our attention on him and to keep moving forward as pilgrims in this life.
