ROMAN CANON. The first Eucharistic prayer of the Mass, dating, with very slight changes, from the sixth century. It is based on the Gelasian Sacramentary, ascribed to Pope Gelasius I (reigned 492-96).

It was the only 'Eucharistic Prayer' until Paul VI destroyed the Rite of the Mass, and it was simply referred to as 'the Canon'.
