The Valley of Hinnom was a real place outside Jerusalem where children were sacrificed, and Jesus later used its name, Gehenna, to warn about final judgment. The Church reads that as more than a garbage dump image: it is a biblical picture of the soul’s terrible loss when it turns away from God.
That cursed valley is answered by Calvary, where the Father gives his Son freely for the life of the world. What was prefigured in horror is fulfilled in love, and the Mass continues that one true sacrifice for us now.
